AI is rapidly climbing toward the peak of the Gartner Hype Cycle. In web development, new AI-powered tools are flooding the market, each boasting the ability to generate websites using AI rapidly.
Is this influx of AI-powered solutions poised to solve the ongoing developer shortage?
While some leaders view AI’s ability to automate code as an easy answer to today’s talent woes, I don’t believe this is the case, or at least it’s only one part of the solution.
Yes, AI tools enable increased efficiency and productivity for senior developers. However, AI’s ability to automate historically time-intensive, entry-level tasks has a significant unforeseen consequence: It will limit pathways for aspiring and junior developers to learn essential skills on the job and grow in their careers.
As organizations navigate AI’s long-term impact on web development processes, business and IT leaders must intentionally use AI tools that don’t undermine already limited talent pipelines.

AI-powered development tools are yet to be the revolutionary leap forward many business leaders anticipated. While these tools tout endless customization, their most practical functions today involve making routine development choices and creating fancy Lorem Ipsum placeholders for a new website.
The most compelling application of AI-powered tools is their ability to empower experienced developers and jumpstart projects. With AI doing some of the heavy lifting behind the scenes, senior developers can free up time to tackle the more significant questions: What is the broader strategy for the project? How do pieces of the website project fit together? Which development steps require more attention, and which ones are more boilerplate?
Think of senior developers like movie directors. They’re not running the cameras but instead orchestrating tasks. When Steven Spielberg directs a picture, he doesn’t do everything himself because that would detract from his productivity and creativity. Instead, he offers direction on how he wants a movie’s cinematography or other elements to shape up, leaving it to others on set to execute that vision.
Developers are in a similar situation. As the popularity of AI-powered tools increases, we will see more senior developers step into a “movie director” role, with AI performing more tedious, building-block tasks. But even though AI can spit out boilerplate code or create connections with Google Analytics, a human still has to, for now, decide if those programming choices are the right ones, just like Spielberg makes the final decisions about the films he directs.
How this evolution will impact the path for ascending and aspiring web developers must be clarified. What will happen to junior developers if AI essentially fills the role of entry-level employees under more senior supervision? Will they have to compete against the speed and productivity of AI? Will they even get hired in the first place?
The importance of nurturing and including junior developers in the talent pipeline cannot be overstated. They represent the future of web development and bring fresh perspectives and creativity. Additionally, mentoring junior developers allows for knowledge transfer and the cultivation of new talent, ensuring the industry’s growth and vitality.
While AI can enhance productivity and efficiency for senior developers, it cannot replace the vital role junior developers play in shaping the future of web development. So, it’s essential to continue supporting and investing in developing emerging talent to maintain a robust and innovative web development community.
Considering that all senior developers have to start somewhere, AI introduces new hurdles for business and IT leaders — perhaps solving talent shortages in the short term but exacerbating gaps in the long run.
As AI accelerates core development needs, the challenge is that we must rely on something other than entry-level work to provide pathways to seasoned developers organically. To maintain a healthy pipeline of senior developers, we must intentionally cultivate the existence of those senior developers and not allow AI shortcuts and efficiencies to undermine learning experiences for entry-level employees.
This means leaders must find alternate avenues to nurture and retain talent. One option involves apprenticeships in web development spaces, which could emerge as a popular solution for developing new talent in an AI-driven world. As an apprentice, junior developers take on work that challenges their skill level, learning on the job while under supervision. This opportunity allows new web developers to stretch their abilities rather than autonomously completing entry-level tasks as a team.
AI may also provide coaching and review support directly to junior developers. This innovative approach leverages the capabilities of artificial intelligence to create a dynamic and personalized learning experience.
One of the key benefits of AI coaching is its ability to provide real-time feedback. As junior developers work on their coding projects, AI systems can constantly monitor their progress, identifying mistakes and areas for improvement. This immediate feedback loop allows developers to learn from their errors and make corrections as they go, significantly accelerating their learning curve.
Moreover, AI can offer tailored suggestions for improvement. By analyzing a developer’s code and comparing it to best practices and coding standards, AI can provide specific recommendations on optimizing code, enhancing efficiency, and ensuring code quality. This guidance can help junior developers fix immediate issues and develop good coding habits that will serve them well throughout their careers.
In addition to pointing out mistakes and making suggestions, AI can also recognize and reinforce positive coding practices to boost a developer’s confidence and motivation. When junior developers receive praise for their accomplishments, it can inspire them to continue learning and grow in their roles.
Regardless of the method, we will need a way to cultivate senior talent in a world where entry-level tasks are automatable. If addressed briefly, talent shortages will only worsen as fewer junior developers are afforded opportunities to rise in rank.
Where does this leave us? Despite the potential of AI-powered web development tools, AI won’t solve the developer shortage anytime soon. But these tools will (and already do) increase senior developers’ efficiency and productivity.
It’s an exciting milestone, but focusing solely on AI’s benefits overshadows the challenge of developing talent pools in a world where entry-level responsibilities are increasingly automated. In light of the questions AI raises, business and IT leaders must proactively develop junior talent and carefully integrate AI into their development processes. It’s a balancing act, but one worth tackling.
